Weston Canal > Frodsham > Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge
Frodsham town centre is about a mile from Sutton Weaver swing bridge
Until the Weston Canal was constructed, Frodsham Cut gave access to the river via Frodsham lock.
Ships waited for the tide here on passage to Liverpool before the Manchester Ship Canal was built.
Frodsham is a pretty market town and a former port of some antiquity.
It once had a cheese warehouse, a salt works and a boat yard with its own dock.
A canal was dug from Sutton Weaver to give access to a deep water channel of the River Mersey at Weston Point in 1807 and after this date the use of Frodsham lock declined.
The river here is used mainly for watersports and sailing, but there is a regular service of boats carrying grain, which is taken to Manchester by lorry.
Frodsham should be visited. It is a small market town with a good range of shops and amenities.
In the centre is the Bear's Paw Inn dating back to 1632 and is the start of the Sandstone Trail which is a popular 34 mile walking route to Whitchurch.
The trail takes you along the elevated ridge of sandstones hills with some fo the finest views of Cheshire.
