ANDERTON MURAL UNVEILEDThe weather gods smiled on us at Anderton Boat Lift on Friday afternoon, March 26th. A very large mural depicting the engineers responsible for the building of the lift and its later modification has been installed on the Lift site.
This very attractive and imaginative work by Diana Tackley measures 28 ft by 8 ft, and covers the concrete retaining wall supporting the operations centre. It was painted as seven separate 8’x 4’ panels in the artist’s studio, and then erected on site. An invited audience of about 80, all of whom had an association with the restoration project, enjoyed drinks, sandwiches and a boat trip down the lift (for the first ones to respond to the invitation). Following an introduction by Richard Drake, chairman of the Anderton Boat Lift Trust, the unveiling was performed by Frances Done, chairperson of The Waterways Trust. Diana Tackley described the work and thanked the army of people who had helped.
Everyone went away feeling that this rounded the project off nicely, and it represented the end of the useful life of the Anderton Boat Lift Trust with a job well done. Diana Tackley will be on site displaying an exhibition of her work in the Marquee until Sunday 11th. April. British Waterways Volunteer’s Day
