Fred Dibnah visits the Anderton Boat Lift

Dr Fred Dibnah MBE, steeplejack and television presenter, was born on 28 April 28 1938.

That great champion of industrial Britain, Fred Dibnah described his 2004 visit to the Anderton Boat Lift as ‘simply wonderful’ and stated that of all the many engineering wonders he had in the past examined he considered the boat lift to be up there with the very best.

On a warm summer evening at the end of a filming assignment Fred took a short trip, by narrow boat, along the Weaver Navigation and it was something, he said, as he disembarked that he would like to do again. Sadly, that was not to be.

Fred passed away after a long illness on November 6, 2004, aged 66.
